Welcome to the Motuihe Project website. Please feel free to browse around our little island paradise.
Motuihe Project was established in 2000 by members of the community in conjunction with the Department of Conservation. It was inspired by the vision of the island’s resident concessionaire, Ronnie Harrison. A community trust was formed and a Restoration Plan devised to drive the restoration of New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna to this island.
Motuihe Island is free of pests. We need your help to keep this island pest free. You can help by:
- Checking your boat or kayak and gear for rodent and insect stowaways before you leave the mainland.
- Cleaning your footwear, clothing and gear and checking for seeds - weeds are a problem on the island.
- Packing luggage or food you are bringing to the island in rodent proof containers - no open containers or plastic bags please.
- Leaving your dog or other domestic pets at home - dogs pose a risk to the native species on this island.
