This wonderful island has some of the best sandy beaches of the inner Gulf islands. Clear waters, sheltered anchorages, and visitor facilities make it a popular destination for day visits and camping holidays. Walks around the island's coast, where rocky platforms alternate with sandy beaches, or across its rolling pastured lands, give visitors a chance to explore the island, enjoy wide views of the Hauraki Gulf and nearby islands, and visit relics of the island's varied history. You can walk around most of the Motuihe coastline at low tide, and there are plenty of fascinating rockpools to explore. Make sure you check the tides before you leave. The easiest route is to walk the south coast first.

Wherever the wind is blowing from, it is usually possible to find a sheltered sandy beach for sunbathing or picnicking- Ocean Beach, Wharf Bay, Snapper Bay and Calypso Bay.

Camp Bookings

Camping areas are available. Please visit the Department of Conservation website for more booking information and costs.

Safety

Some parts of the island are potentially dangerous. There are unfenced clifftops where extreme care is needed especially with children.

Looking after the Island

Motuihe Island was declared pest free in 2005 of the introduced animals that are destroying native plants and wildlife on the mainland. Boats are one of the main ways that unwanted pests like rats, mice and cats can be transported to our island reserves. All these animals have been found on boats. DOGS, CATS AND OTHER DOMESTIC ANIMALS ARE PROHIBITED FROM BEACH AND LAND ON MOTUIHE ISLAND.

Please note:

  • Dogs and other animals are prohibited on any part of Motuihe Island. Endangered birds, like the NZ Dotteral, are put at risk if your pet disturbs their nesting sites.
  • Open Fires are prohibited on Motuihe Island, Gas BBQs are permitted.
  • Rubbish needs to be taken off the island with you - there are no rubbish disposal facilities.
  • When you arrive by boat, check your boat and supplies for rodent stowaways. Keep poison bait stations on board.
  • Observe the signs and stay away from shorebird nesting areas.
  • Take care when visiting archaeological or historic sites.
  • PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU DO NOT BRING SOIL WITH SEEDS ON DIRTY SHOES.
  • If bringing camping gear please check for mice, rats and ants.
